Biography

With five semi-finalists and four medallists, the 1948 South African boxing squad was very successful. George Hunter was one of the two Springbok boxers to bring home a gold medal, won in the light-heavyweight division. Ending his amateur career with 82 wins out of 90 fights and the 1947 national middleweight title under his belt, Hunter turned professional. Despite earning the South African light-heavyweight title in 1949, his career did not earn him much money, and he retired in 1954 with a 13-6-0 record. A learned boilermaker, Hunter then started his own steel company.
