Biography

Zürich-native Angela Anderes was the top female figure skater in Switzerland in the 1930s, winning the ladies’ singles championship five times, from 1935 to 1937 and 1939 to 1940 (briefly losing the title to Inge Manger of Basel in 1938). She also competed at the 1937 World Championships where she finished 10th, and scored two sixth place finishes at the 1938 and 1939 European Championships. Chosen to represent her country at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Anderes placed 13th in a field of 36 other skaters in the women’s singles event, also finishing five places in front of her fellow compatriot Herta Frey-Dexler.

Anderes spent some time in the United States training in the Los Angeles area in the early 1940s where she also performed alongside other notable skaters at the time at rinks in California and worked on choreography for skating performances. She also worked in the entertainment industry under contract with Warner Brothers in Hollywood. After her return to Switzerland, Anderes was married briefly to Hans Rüegsegger from 1954 until divorcing in 1959. She worked as a seamstress in Zürich until relocating to Hinterrhein in the 1960s.
