Biography

Jónas Þórarinn Ásgeirsson was born in Húsavik, but his family moved to Siglufjörður the year after his birth. He was an excellent all-round skier, with ski jumping as his speciality. In 1946 he jumped 54 m in Siglufjörður, to this day the longest ski jump ever made in Iceland. He competed in the famous Holmenkollen in Oslo, and was the first ever Icelandic ski jumper selected for the Olympic Games in 1948. He later took over his father’s store in Siglufjörður, but moved with his family to Reykjavík in 1968 to work as a car salesman until his retirement in 1982.
