Biography

Outside of his day job as a business manager in Stockholm Axel Blomqvist was one of the finest speed skaters in Sweden over 500 metres. In 1917 Blomqvist became the Nordic champion in the distance, easily beating his Norwegian rivals. He won nine medals at the Swedish championships from 1917 to 1927, including setting a long-standing record of 44.9 seconds in 1923. A year later he finished sixth in his favoured event at the 1924 Chamonix Olympics, in addition to placing 13th and 15th in the 1,500 metres and 5,000 metres, respectively.

Personal Bests: 500 – 44.9 (1923); 1500 – 2:30.7 (1917); 5000 – 9:10.1 (1917); 10000 – 18:34.0 (1917).
