When he was 12-years old Ugandan boxer John Munduga won the junior championships in 1972. From there Munduga went on to win the school championships from 1973 to 1975, an inter-cities title in 1976, and a novice title a year later to become one of the best young boxing prospects in the country. By 1978 he had fought in his first overseas tournament, winning bronze in the King’s Cup in Thailand. Two years later he fought in the light-welterweight tournament at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, beating Nelson Rodríguez (VEN), before losing to Farouk Chanchoun (IRQ).
In 1981 Munduga began his professional career in Germany, winning all 13 fights in the country. By 1984 he had relocated to the United States where his career went from strength to strength, winning his next 11 fights. He then faced his toughest challenge to date when he fought Mark Breland at the Sands Casino Hotel in Atlantic City in June 1986. Two years earlier Breland had won gold in the welterweight at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and in Atlantic City he beat Munduga in the sixth round to end the Ugandan’s undefeated streak. Although Munduga won his next fight, he then lost the final four of his career before he retired with a record of 30 bouts with 25 wins, 18 by knock out.
After his competitive career Munduga returned to Uganda where he worked as a boxing coach in Kampala. In 2000 he also worked as the national coach of the Rwandan boxing team.
