Biography

Hans Hartleb placed 18th in the Nordic combined at the 1972 Sapporo Winter Games, representing East Germany. Hartleb later became chief national biathlon coach in reunified Germany and coached Kati Wilhelm, among others. In 2003 it became clear that he had actively worked for 15 years for the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (Ministry of State Security / Stasi) in the former GDR, and had delivered several reports about his teammates. Therefore, he was released from his job within the German Skiing Association in 2006.
