During his career as a player for almost two decades Frigyes Helmeczi played for BBTE (1931-44), MTK (1948-49), and Postás (1952-53), winning five Hungarian Championships. Between 1936 and 1943 he was a member of the Hungarian national team.
Helmeczi skated at the 1936 Garmisch Winter Olympics, the 1938 and 1939 World Championships, and the 1939 Winter World University Championships. When he hung up his skates in 1954, he continued to serve as a coach for Hungarian hockey. He achieved his greatest managerial success at Kinizsi (FTC). Under his leadership, the team won two championship gold medals, but he also worked as the head coach of the Hungarian national team. In 2015, the Hungarian Hockey Association elected him to the Hungarian Ice Hockey Hall of Fame.
