Biography

Wilhelm, father of Willi Köstinger, was an Austrian Nordic skier who participated in the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Winter Olympics. He competed in the Nordic combined event and placed 15th as the best Austrian finisher. In 1938 he won his only Austrian national title, again in the Nordic combined. His brother Manfred was also a nationally successful Nordic skier.

During World War II, Köstinger was a member of the SS and involved in several war crimes like deportations of Jews to Auschwitz and mass executions. According to reports he was were specialized to detect and eliminate “enemies” of the Nazi regime behind the front line. After the war he was never accused.
