Biography

Seilala Sua was a discus thrower who competed at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games, finishing 10th in 2000 at Sydney. Sua won a silver medal in discus at the 1996 World Junior Championships, also finishing eighth that year in the shot put. She competed at the 1999 and 2001 World Championships, placing sixth in 1999 and fifth in 2001.

Sua competed in college at UCLA, where she won seven NCAA titles, at the time a record for women, and was named an All-American 14 times. This included four consecutive discus titles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, making her only the second woman to win four straight individual titles in the same event. She was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010. Sua was ranked #6 in the world in 1999 and 2001. She was ranked in the US top 10 every year from 1997-2005, ranking #1 in 1998-2001 and #2 in 1997 and 2004.

Sua served as a volunteer throws coach at UCLA in 2005-06. She became an assistant coach in charge of throwers at the University of Hawai’i in 2011.
