Born in Nouméa, New Caledonia in 1968, Jean-Philippe Theas took up taekwondo, becoming the French champion in the 58 kg class in 1986. Two years later the sport was included on the Olympic programme at the 1988 Seoul Games as a demonstration event. Theas competed in the bantamweight class where he beat Johan Lapré (NED) before losing to the eventual winner Ji Yong-Suk (KOR).
