Biography

Andy Benes was a right-handed pitcher who played for the USA at the 1988 Olympic demonstration baseball tournament. He attended the University of Evansville, after which he was drafted as the first overall pick of the 1988 Major League Baseball Draft by the San Diego Padres.

Benes played for the Padres from 1989-95. He was named the National League Rookie Pitcher of the Year in 1989. He made the All-Star Game in 1993 and led the Majors in strikeouts in 1994. Benes had a 14-year Major League career. He played with the Seattle Mariners at the end of the 1995 season, the St. Louis Cardinals in 1996-97, the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1998-88, and he was back with the Cardinals in his last three seasons, 2000-02. He finished his Major League career with a record of 155 wins and 139 losses, a career ERA of 3.97, and exactly 2,000 strikeouts.
