Like several of his teammates, Douglas Stone graduated from Friends School and then attended Johns Hopkins University. After finishing his medical studies in 1937, he became a surgeon. During World War II, he helped establish mobile surgical hospitals. He was involved in the Normandy landings in June 1944, and until the end of the war practiced as a military surgeon close to the front lines.
