Biography

Sacajuwea Hunter lost her legs at the age of only 16 months, when her mother placed her in boiling water. She was taken away from her birth parents and adopted, and began training for Paralympic athletic events at the age of seven. Originally a swimmer, she was better known for her on-land racing events. She competed in the 800 metre wheelchair demonstration event at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and placed fourth. She also won a silver medal at the 1988 Paralympics in the 3,000 metre wheelchair event for A1-3/A9/L2 disabilities. This was a mixed disabled class event for people with various levels of amputations.
