Tibor Weißenborn

Tibor Weißenborn was a German field hockey player who participated in the 2000 Olympics at Sydney. Germany beat Great Britain 4-0 to win the match for fifth place. At Athens in 2004 he finally won a medal, when Germany beat Spain 4-3 after sudden death extra time in the bronze medal match. At Beijing in 2008, he crowned his career by winning the gold medal when Germany beat Spain, again, 3-2 in the final.

In 1999 and 2003, Weißenborn won the European Championship, and also the 2001 and 2003 European Indoors. He also won the Champions Trophy in 2001 and 2007, the Worlds in 2002 and 2006, and the 2003 World Indoors. Weißenborn was on the squads that lost the Champions Trophy finals in 2000, 2002, and 2006. He played 324 international matches (including 17 indoor), scoring 35 goals (five indoor) from 1999-2008.

At club level, Weißenborn played with Berliner HC, Gladbacher HTC, Bloemendaaler HC in the Netherlands, and finally Rot-Weiß Köln. He helped Bloemendaal win the 2006 and 2007 Dutch title. He was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Weißenborn married non-Olympian field hockey player Kerstin Hoyer. He studied sports science and specialised in marketing and communication.
