Biography

Fritz de Boever was a Belgian city architect situated in Ghent. Nothing else is known of his life. Together with fellow city architect Georges Audoor he planned and rebuilt the Van Eyck Swimming Pool, one of the most beautiful pools in Belgium. It was also the oldest one in Belgium and is known for its Art Déco furnishings. The brick building was built in 1886 by architect Edmond De Vigne with Neo-Renaissance and Classicist influences. In 1932, a glass roof was placed over the swimming pool and the changing rooms were renewed. In 1952 and 2001 it was again renovated and re-opened in 2003 in a neoclassical design. Mainly because of the Art Déco design of the interior, the pool was listed as a historical monument. In 1932, De Boever won the Grand Competition for architects at the University of Ghent.
