Biography

German painter Max Feldbauer was an impressionist and in 1913 co-founded the artist group “Die Scholle” (The Clod). He studied at the School of Applied Arts and the Art Academy in München until 1896. In addition to working for the magazine Jugend, he worked as a painting teacher of painting at the Ladies’ Academy of the Female Artist Association in München. A member of the München Secession since 1908, he founded the New München Secession in 1913. He was married to painter Elise Eigner (1867-?).

Feldbauer mostly painted peasant scenes, soldiers, and horse pictures, but also in moods. In 1928, he became president of the Academy for Fine Arts in Dresden. The same year he won the bronze medal at the Amsterdam Games for his work Viererzug (Four-in-Hand) in the category of Paintings and Graphic Works. Since they were offered under different titles, the identification is not clear. Feldbauer was prohibited from exhibiting during the Nazi regime of the German Reich and his home was bombed in Munich in 1944. Nevertheless, in the same year, he was included by Hitler in the Gottbegnadeten (God-gifted) list of the most important painters. He then moved to the country, to Oberschneiding, where he died in 1948.
