Biography

Yoshie Nakada was a European style Japanese painter and illustrator who painted mostly in oil. Her favorite motifs were still lives. She absorbed the Western Avant Garde style through her marriage with art critic Jonosuke Nakada. Born as Kikuyo Mishima, Nakada went to school in Ashiya in Osaka prefecture, where she was introduced to painting by Yōga-painter Narashige Koide. From 1927 she studied in Tokyo under Sōtarō Yasui and married in the same year. Her paintings were shown at the Nika Exhibitions of the Second Section group, winning the first prize in 1928. She changed her first name to Yoshie shortly before participating in the 1932 Olympics. After the Ichisuikai Art Group was founded in 1937, she took part in their exhibitions and won their Okada Prize in 1942. After World War II she actually became a member of Ichisukai and was sent to the 1st Exhibition of Contemporary Japanese Art. Nakada was also a member of the founding of the Female Painters Association. In 1984, a major retrospective “Yoshie Nakada of the World” exhibition was held. She died from a heart attack at the age of 93 in a Mitaka hospital.
