Shingo Yamada

Shingo Yamada was the son of painter Keichu Yamada in the Tabata quarter of Tokio. In 1926 he started attending the Japanese Painting Department of the Tokyo Fine Arts School. In 1930 he was awarded first prize at the 11th Emperor’s Exhibition. One year later he graduated and became a student of Somail Yuki. Towards the end of World War II for some years he became a teacher at the Azabu Junior High School. At the 1950 and 1953 Nitten exhibitions he received the Hajuku Award. During the 1960s he won additional prizes including the Japan Art Academy Award in 1963. 1964 he developed a cerebral thrombosis and was temporarily left paraplegic. After he recovered he became director of the Nitten exhibition, where his last work was exhibited in 1976. He died at the age of 68 at the Nihon University Itabashi Hospital.
