Biography

F. L. Gregory lived in the town of Babylon on Long Island. Jones Beach, less than 20 km away, is a state park on the south coast of Long Island that was opened in 1929. The mastermind behind the project was the urban planner Robert Moses (1888-1981), who influenced the architectural and planning history of the city and state of New York for more than 30 years. At the time of the establishment of the Jones Beach State Park, he held the position of director of the Long Island State Park Commission.

The first permanent building in the park was designed by Gregory in September 1934. The so-called “Storehouse” provided most of the infrastructure for Jones Beach. With 3,700 m² of floor space, it was one of the largest buildings and housed, among other things, the park’s fire department and ambulance, stores, and a workshop.
