Biography

Rudy Méndez was entered in the marathon for Puerto Rico at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics but never got to run as the NOC could not fund his trip. Although he was a Puerto Rican citizen, he had been born in Phoenix, Arizona and spent most of his life in the continental United States. He also ran the 1946 US Olympic marathon trials, placing fourth in the AAU trial race. He competed for the New York Pioneer Club. Méndez served in the US Air Force and later retired from the 161st Air Refueling Wing, and then served in the Arizona National Guard.
