Biography

André Monnier was the fourth of four sons, with his parents being mountain shepherds in the hills of the Alps. Monnier excelled as a skier in the outdoors above Chaux-Neuve where he learnt the skills to become a proficient ski jumper. With success at both a regional and national level he was selected to compete at two Olympic Games in the 1950s. At the 1952 Oslo Games Monnier finished in 36th place on the large hill, jumping 56 metres on both attempts. At the 1956 Cortina d’Ampezzo Olympics he finished in 46th place with a best jump of 67.5 metres on his first attempt. Monnier died in Chamblay in Eastern France in October 2023 at the age of 97.
