Biography

Ryuichi Obitani, a student from Keio University, never won a title at national championships in figure skating. After a fourth place in 1930 and a second place in 1931, he had to skip the following championships due to his participation in the Winter Olympics. In 1933, Obitani returned with another fourth place. He was ranked eighth at the World Championships in 1932 in Montréal, and 12th at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics. At home, Obitani took the title at the student championships in 1931. Forty years after his Olympic appearance as an athlete, he acted as judge in the women’s event at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo.
