Josef Schlickenrieder, cousin of Alpine skier Michaela Gerg-Leitner, was an ice hockey goalie who competed with the West German team at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. In total, he earned 49 international caps and played at three World Championships.
Domestically, Schlickenrieder played with EC Bad Tölz (1978-79), EHC 70 München (1979-81), EV Füssen (1981-83), Mannheimer ERC (1983-93), EHC Hannover (1993-96), and EC Bad Nauheim (1996-98). He then started a coaching career with München Barons, Hamburg Freezers, and Eisbären Regensburg. He later coached lower league clubs.
