Biography

Gunnar Ström first represented Sweden in speed skating at the Olympics in 1952, where he was 19th in the 1500 metres and 23rd in the 500 metres. Four years later, he was 15th in the 10,000 metres, 22nd in the 1500 metres, and 42nd in 500 metres. He had his greatest success in 1958, when he became European champion in the 500 metres. Following his retirement from active competition, he turned to coaching and worked with the national team for many decades. During his career, he skated for Eskilstuna IK, and he later coached their squad.

Personal Bests: 500 – 42.1 (1972); 1500 – 2:14.8 (1956); 5000 – 8:28.0 (1956); 10000 – 17:11.5 (1956).
