Philippe Van Volckxsom competed at both the Summer and Winter Olympics, and appeared in three different sports, making him one of only eight Olympians with that distinction (through 2020). Van Volckxsom played ice hockey at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics and the 1924 Chamonix Winter Olympics, when he also speedskated. He returned to the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics as a rower in coxless pairs, partnering his 1924 ice hockey teammate, Carlos Van den Driessche.

A defenseman in hockey, Van Volckxsom started his career in 1912 with Bruxelles IHC but moved to Bruxelles CPB after World War I, and played with them to the end of his career in 1925. He played at the 1924/25 European Championships, helping Belgium win a bronze medal. In speedskating, van Volckxsom was a competitor in national championships in 1913-14 and 1923, placing third in four events. His name is seen spelled variously as “Van Volcksom” or “Van Volxom.”
