Biography

Flatwater canoeists Barbare Lewe-Pohlmann-Schüttpelz and Detlef Lewe were married for a short time, but then divorced. Lewe-Pohlmann finished fifth in the K-1 500 at the 1976 Montréal Summer Games. At Los Angeles in 1984, now re-married to her coach Gerwin Schüttpelz, she won a silver medal in the K-1 500, and a bronze in the K-2 500. She also finished fifth in the K-4 500 event. Due to the US-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Games, she could not participate in Moscow.

Lewe-Pohlmann-Schüttpelz unfortunately finished fourth in the K-1 500 at the Worlds in both 1978 and 1979, and eighth at the 1983 Worlds in the K-2 500. Domestically, she won 34 West German national titles. By profession, she was a bank clerk and worked with the sport marketing department of the Sparkasse group. She later worked with an air service company, living in London for almost 15 years. Upon returning to Germany, Lewe-Pohlmann-Schüttpelz founded her own fitness studio.
