Description

The Faroe Islands does have a National Olympic Committee, the Faroese Confederation of Sports and Olympic Committee. It is possible that such a committee may achieve International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognition in the future, as the nation has affiliations with at least eight International Federations: aquatics (swimming, diving, water polo), archery, badminton, football (soccer), handball, judo, table tennis, and volleyball. The Faroe Islands are a constituent country of Denmark and, as such, may not be recognized by the IOC because they do not currently have independent nation status, although they first applied to the IOC in 1984, and met their requirements in 1987, prior to the more recent rules changes for dependent nations. In addition, the Danish NOC supports their inclusion. However, the Faroe Islands are recognized by the International Paralympic Committee and its athletes have competed at the Paralympics. The nation has also competed at the Island Games since their inception in 1985.
