The Prix de la Reconnaissance Olympique was instituted in 1972, at the urging of IOC President Avery Brundage. It was given for meritorious services given to a National Olympic Committee over a number of years. It was only awarded in 1972 and 1973, with three people each receiving the award in both years. It was discontinued after a decision of the 75th IOC Session in Vienna in 1974.
