The Union Internationale de Tir (UIT) was gradually expanding the Olympic Programme. After only two events in 1932, and three in 1936, the 1948 programme featured four events – two rifle and two pistol events. The 1948 Olympic shooting events were contested from 2-6 August at the well-known Bisley Rifle Range, where many of the 1908 Olympic shooting events were held.
