The open pole vault event on Sunday, 15 July, turned out to be a fiasco. The French organizers had held another event on Monday, 16 July, to appease the Americans, who felt they should not have had to compete on a Sunday. The handicap pole vault event took place on Thursday, 19 July, with only three starters, of whom only American Meredith Colket was known as a pole vaulter. Colket placed third, however, as the event was won by Hungary’s Jakab Kauser with 3.45 metres, off a handicap of 0.45 metres. Later in the day, another open pole vault event was held, again to assuage the Americans, who were still upset about the Sunday pole vault.
