Skijoring, originally called skid-körning, was held as a demonstration sport at the 1928 Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz. The organizing committee of the Denver 1976 Olympic Winter Games also proposed it as a demonstration sport, but those Games were shifted to Innsbruck, Austria.
Skijoring is a sport in which skiers are towed behind horses, although other methods of propulsion are also used (including motorcycles and dogs). It was considered a military competition in Norway and Sweden, and was part of the Nordic Games in 1901, 1905, and 1909. It is today contested primarily in Switzerland and Sweden.
Although the sport is overseen by the International Federation of Sleddog Sports (IFSS), which was founded in 1985, a newer organization, Skijor International, founded in 2012, has more recently become the leader in promoting the sport of skijoring globally.
