Biography

Gábor Cseh started his sports career in 1936 at the Karakán KK, the first kayak association in Hungary. The birth of Hungarian kayaking is actually due to the Berlin Olympics. In the 1936 unofficial Hungarian championship, which was the qualifier for the Olympic team, he won first place alongside Sándor Gelle in the K2 10,000m, so they earned the right to start the Olympics, albeit at their own expense. Due to brief preparation, they finished last in both the 1,000 and 10,000 metres.

In 1938, Cseh won the first official Hungarian championship in three disciplines: in kayak doubles at 1,000 and 10,000 metres, and in the 10,000-metre folding kayak doubles. He also finished second in K1 at 1,000 and 10,000 metres.

In 1938 Cseh was named to the Hungarian team for the first kayak-canoe world championship, but did not start due to illness. In 1941, he won the long-distance kayak championship. In 1942 together with other kayakers he founded the kayak department of MOVE and continued his career with this new affiliation. In addition to his racing career, he held the position of national head coach, starting in 1940.

After the World War II, Cseh first worked as the secretary-general of the Hungarian Kayak Canoe Association, and then in the kayak-canoe department of Építök SE. He also published several articles on the history of kayaking.
