Biography

Goalie Enrico Calcaterra began ice hockey thanks to the Italian-Canadian Frank Roncarelli, husband of his cousin, and both were among the founders of HC Milano, playing with them for all the championships from 1925 to 1936-37 (the team had changed its name to ADG Milano in 1935). In the 1937-38 season the federation had imposed the merger between the two Milano teams, ADG Milano and Diavoli Rossoneri Milano, and Calcaterra found himself defending the net of the new team, AMDG Milano, in his final season.

With the Italian national team Calcaterra took the field 32 times, competing in two editions of the European Championships (1926, 1929), four World Championships (1930, 1933-35) and one Olympic Winter Games (1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen).

After World War II, he was president of the Italian Ice Hockey Federation (1946-52). In 1952 the FIHG and the Italian Ice Skating Federation were merged into the Italian Ice Sports Federation, of which Calcaterra was the second president (1960-72), after Remo Vigorelli. Furthermore, from 1933-68, as a member of CONI, he was the Italian representative on the International Ice Hockey Federation. Five years after his death he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame, the first Italian so honored.
