Biography

Italian politician Franco Frattini graduated in law in 1979 and two years later began his career in the judiciary system as state prosecutor in Roma, becoming the administrative judge of the Piedmont Regional Administrative Court in 1984.

Frattini was Secretary General of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in 1994 (during the first Berlusconi government) and from 1995-96 was Minister for Public Administration and Regional Affairs in the Dini government. He was elected in 1996 to the Chamber of Deputies on the Forza Italia list (center-right), and from 1997-2000 Frattini was city councilor in Roma. Re-elected to the Chamber in 2000, he became the Public Service Minister for the Public Service and then Minister for Foreign Affairs, during the second Berlusconi government, when he also became Commissioner of the European Union for Justice, Freedom Portfolio, and Security, a position he held until May 2008.

Re-elected to the House in the 2008 general election, Frattini again held the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs until 2011. He became president of the Italian Society for the International Organization (SIOI) in 2012 and in January 2022 was unanimously elected President of the Council of State of the Italian Republic. Frattini became a Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2004, and in 2011 became a recipient of the Olympic Order (gold). A few months after his death, at the beginning of April 2023, an Italian postage stamp was released in his honour.
