Biography

In his youth, Bartolo Consolo was a swimmer and water polo player, and also an engineering graduate. As a sports administrator, he was president of Rari Nantes Perugia and AS Waterpolo Roma and in 1987 was elected president of the Italian Swimming Federation (FIN), with a unanimous majority.

Consolo also filled other important roles, and from 1988 was president of the European Swimming Federation (LEN), and from 1992 vice-president of the International Swimming Federation (FINA). He was also vice-president of the Italian National Olympic Committee and president of the Onesti Foundation.

In his later years, Consolo lived at Petit Lancy, near Genève, and had dual Italian/Swiss nationality. In September 2016 he was elected president of the Swiss Swimming Federation for the French/Italian region. He was inducted into the Swimming Hall of Fame in 2015 as a contributor and Honorary Member of FINA.
