Biography

Following a brief stint in the Navy at the end of World War II Baaron Pittenger worked as a sports reporter for newspapers in Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Pittenger then got jobs at the athletics departments at Brown University and later at Harvard University. At Harvard he served as the associate director of athletics from 1970 to 1977, after which he moved to Colorado to join the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).

One of Pittenger’s first roles while working for the USOC was organising the inaugural edition of the National Sports Festival in 1978. By 1981 he had been promoted to the post of assistant executive director, helping to lead the USOC during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Pittenger had two stints serving as the USOC’s executive director, the first was a brief one during 1987, and the second was from 1988 to 1990.

Pittenger was awarded with the Olympic Order in Silver in 1992. He later became the executive director of USA Hockey and helped to create the United States Anit-Doping Agency, serving as special assistant to the CEO for ten years.
