Ouranios Ioannides began his career as a science teacher working in secondary schools in Cyprus from 1971 to 1986. Ioannides continued to teach sciences until the mid-1990s when he became an education officer at the Ministry of Education and Culture, before becoming a professor in 1997. In addition to sports, Ioannides had a long political career that saw him become a member of parliament in 1996 and appointed as the Minister of Education and Culture in 1999. He later served as the President of the National Olympic Committee of Cyprus from 2008 to 2016.
