Marcelino Macome was elected as the President of the National Olympic Committee of Mozambique (COM) in 2002 and stayed in that post until 2017. Macome’s work at the COM included awarding a scholarship to Maria Mutola, who went on to win gold in the 800 metres at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He also led the team that was behind the construction of new headquarters for the COM. Macome was a manager at the Clube de Desportos da Maxaquene sports club and was the manager of the sporting newspaper Desafio.
