In the sport of polo Marcos Uranga had an important career, with his contributions not only recognised in his native Argentina but across the world. Uranga was born in Buenos Aires in 1936 and became a keen rugby player while he was at school. He then began to play polo after being taught the sport by his father, with him becoming the captain of the Jockey Club team. From 1983 to 1987 Uranga served as the President of the Association of Argentina Polo. Along with Glen Holden he was one of the individuals who co-founded the Federation of International Polo (FIP) in 1982. Uranga was the federation’s President from its inception until 1997 with him and Holden creating the World Polo Championship.
