Biography

Prior to his appearance at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Abdelrahman El-Trabily’s best international result was second in the super-heavyweight category at the 2011 African Championships. He earned a spot on Egypt’s 2012 Olympic team as the runner-up in the same division at the Africa and Oceania qualification tournament, behind Tunisia’s Radhouane Chebbi. El-Trabily, after receiving a bye in the first round in London, had the misfortune of meeting Cuba’s Mijaín López, the 2008 Olympic Champion who would defend his crown in 2012. In the repêchage he lost against Georgia’s Guram Pherselidze. A graduate of Egypt’s prestigious Al-Azhar University and a teacher of the Quran by career, El-Trabily was shot in the head and killed in August 2013 during a march in support of Egypt’s ousted president Mohamed Morsi.
