The son of a Kilkenny farmer, Bill Mullins became a distinguished show jumper and eventer. He served with the Irish Army, reaching the rank of colonel, and joined the Army Equitation School in 1945. At the Royal Dublin Horse Show in1949, Mullins helped Ireland win the Aga Khan Trophy, with Mullins winning the individual title.
Mullins went in to represent Ireland at the 1956 Olympics and the 1970 World Championships at Punchestown. He was also the chef d’equipe to the Irish team at both European Championships and Olympic Games. A director of the Supply and Transport Corps, Mullins was a member of the Bord na gCapall (The Irish Horse Board) being responsible for the purchase of Army horses. In 1991 Mullins was presented with an award by the Equestrian Federation of Ireland for his “contribution to the equestrian world”.
