A graduate of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, Sergio Ojeda was a Chilean national light-heavyweight boxing champion during the 1920s and was thus selected to represent his country at the 1928 Summer Olympics. He had the misfortune, however, of meeting Víctor Avendaño, the Argentine fighter who would go on to claim the gold medal, in the opening round. After his competitive career ended, Ojeda worked as a real estate broker and life insurance agent until 1944, when he became heavily involved in promoting professional boxing across Chile, prompting a resurgence of interest in the sport. He was also active politically with the Agrarian Labor Party and was elected to the National Congress of Chile in 1953, where he served on the Standing Committee for Public Education. He remained in this position until 1957, when he was charged and convicted of fraud relating to several lands deals in which he was involved. He moved to the United States in 1970 and settled in Los Angeles, where he remained in active in the promotion of boxing until his death in 1996.
