Biography

Track cyclist Norbert Dürpisch was a member of the East German team pursuit team that lost the match for third place against Great Britain by only 0.34 seconds at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. In 1975 he won bronze with the East German team pursuit at the track World Championships. He had his greatest year in 1977, winning the World Championships in both individual and team pursuit. In 1976 and 1977 he also took the East German national title in individual pursuit. In 1978 Dürpisch won the Tour de Thüringen and placed second in the individual pursuit at the World Championships, but was disqualified for doping with anabolic steroids. He then turned to coaching.
