Road cyclist Bernd Drogan was a member of the East German time trial team that won silver at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, losing only to the Soviet Union. He also competed in the individual road race but did not finish. Drogan rode on winning team time trials at the 1979 and 1981 World Championships. Drogan himself finished third at the 1979 Worlds road race and was World Champion in 1982. He was then elected Sportsman of the Year in both years. In 1981, he also won the Tour de GDR.

Drogan studied sports at the DHfK Leipzig (Deutsche Hochschule für Körperkultur) and became a graduate sports teacher at Cottbus. After re-unification he worked as a bookkeeper and opened a sporting goods shop. Besides this, he worked as a regional coach with the Brandenburg Cycling Federation.
