In the mid-1960s Dutch cyclist Harrie Jansen had several wins at races both in the Netherlands and Belgium to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. Jansen then finished 24th in the road race at the Mexico City Olympics, just over five minutes behind the race winner. Following more consistent results in minor races he turned professional in 1970, but eventually retired only a few years later. After his cycling career Jansen worked for a Dutch radio station and in public relations for various cycling teams. His older brother Jan was also a cyclist, with him winning silver in the tandem on the track at the Mexico City Games.
