Werner Karlsson represented Hammarby IF, winning the Stockholm-Uppsala-Stockholm race over 200 km in the pre-Olympic season. In the same year, he placed 10th in the traditional race round Lake Mälaren. On the same course, he finished 19th in the Olympic road time trial but was a non-scoring member of the Swedish team that won the team event. He may have been disadvantaged by his relatively late starting time in the second half of the field. Karlsson married Axelia Alfrida Holmgren.
