Biography

Mario Kummer was an East German road cyclist who won the world title in the 100 km team time trial in 1981 and 1989. In 1986 and 1987 he added two bronze medals. He was also a member of the team that won the gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

After German re-unification, Kummer turned professional until 1998, riding with Team Telekom. He participated in five Tours de France, and four times at both the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España. After his retirement, Kummer became Regional Chief Coach in Bavaria and later managed the pro cycling teams Team Telekom, T-Mobile Team, and Team Astana.
