Biography

László Orczán started his cycling career at the age of 17 with Törekvés SE, and then competed in the colors of the club throughout his career. He also did speed skating as an additional sport, and in 1933 finished fourth in the Hungarian speed skating championship. In cycling he initially competed mainly in road races. At the age of 18 he won the Budapest-Siófok 100 km road race, then at the age of only 19, in 1931, he triumphed in the individual road race championship. In 1933, he was third in the Tour de Hongrie and was a member of the Hungarian team that won the team competition. However, despite his road success, he continued to race on the track. In 1935 and 1936 he won the national championship in the 1000-metre time trial and in 1937 finished first in sprint.

In 1936, Orczán set a world record in the 1,000-metre time trial, so he went to the Berlin Olympics as a favorite, but finished fifth in the kilometre time trial and seventh in the team pursuit. After World War II, Orczán coached in the cycling department of MTE, and in speed skating also served as a judge.
