Biography

Track cyclist Volker Winkler was a member of the East German pursuit team at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, winning a silver medal. Winkler was also on World Championship teams from 1977-79 and in 1981, earning gold medals. In 1982, he added a World bronze medal.

In 1979 and 1980 Winkler won the East German nationals in the individual pursuit and the Madison, respectively. After retiring in 1985 he worked as a cycling coach, first at SC Cottbus, the club he had competed for, then at RSC Cottbus, and later at Berlin Cycling Union.
