Mohammad Sultan was a member of Afghanistan’s royal Durrani dynasty through marriage. He was the son-in-law of Mohammad Yusuf, who was the Minister of Agriculture and Sports in the Afghan government and captain of Afghanistan’s delegation to the 1936 Summer Olympic field hockey tournament. Sultan attended the tournament as well and played in all four of the team’s matches where, despite having been introduced to the sport only five years previously, the squad finished in joint fifth place. Sultan later became a superintendent of the Punjab Police, an organization known for counting among its members some of the top field hockey players in the world. He held the title of Shahzada, or “prince”, until his death in 1971.
